강 위에 걸친 조잡한 다리 옆에
그들의 기는 4월의 미풍 맞아 펼쳐졌도다.

여긴 예전에 무장한 농부들 진을 치고
온 세상 뒤흔든 총을 쏘았던 곳.


적군은 오래 전에 말없이 잠들고

로도라꽃

오월,해풍이 이 벽지에 불어 들 때 
나는 갓 핀 로도라꽃을 숲속에서 보았다.

그 잎 없는 꽃이 습지의 한 구석에 피어
황야와 완만한 강물에 기쁨을 주고,

웅덩이에 떨어진 자줏빛 꽃잎은 
그 고운 빛깔로 시커먼 물을 환하게 했었다.

여기에 홍작이 깃을 식히러 와서
새의 차림을 무색케하는 그 꽃에 추파를 던질지도.


로도라여, 만일 사람들이 너에게 물어 
왜 이런 아름다움을 이 땅과 이 하늘에 헛되이 
버리느냐 하거든,

그들에게 일러라, 만일 눈이 보라고 만들어 진 것이라면,
아름다움에는 그 자체의 존재 이유가 있다고. 

왜 너는 여기에 나타났느냐? 장미의 적수여
나는 물을 생각을 해 보지도 않았고, 알지도 못했다.

그러나 나의 단순한 무지로 추측컨대,
나를 생기게 한 바로 그 '힘'이 너를 생기게 했으리라.



The Rhodora

On Being Asked, Whence Is The Flower?


In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,

I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,

Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,

To please the desert and the sluggish brook.

The purple petals fallen in the pool

Made the black water with their beauty gay;

Here might the red-bird come his plumes to cool,

And court the flower that cheapens his array.

Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why

This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,

Tell them, dear, that, if eyes were made for seeing,


Then beauty is its own excuse for Being;

Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!

I never thought to ask; I never knew;

But in my simple ignorance suppose

The self-same power that brought me there, brought you. 



브라마(梵天)

각자와 모두 
 

 저 들판의 붉은 코트 어릿광대는 
그대가 산꼭대기에서 보고 있는 걸 생각지도 못하며; 
 
저 멀리 고원목장 어린 암소의 아득한 울음소리
그대 귀를 즐겁게 하기 위한 것 아니고; 
 
교회종지기가 울리는 정오의 종소리 또한
알프스를 넘어가는 나폴레온과 그의 군대  
 
말을 멈춰 그 소리에 귀기울여 
즐겁게 들을 거라 생각지도 않으며;

나는 새벽 오리나무 가지에서 노래하는

녀석은 노래 부르지만 즐겁지가 않네, 
 
강과 하늘을 가져오지 않아서 그런가봐
새는 내 귀에, 모두는 내 눈에 노래했던 거라네. 
 

깨질 듯 아름다운 조개들 바닷가에 있어,
파도의 거품들이 금방 밀려와  
 
그 속 진주들 화려한 광택 빛나게 하고
사나운 바다는 포효하는 굉음을 내면서 
 
나로부터 벗어나며 인사를 하네 
나는 해초와 거품을 걷어내어 
 
바다의 보물들을 집으로 가져왔지만
초라하고 보기 싫은 하찮은 것들이 되었네 
 
태양과 모래와 파도소리의 아름다움을
바닷가에 두고 와서 그런가봐.. 
 

연인은 그 우아한 소녀를 눈여겨 보며 
처녀들의 행렬에서 뒤 처지기를 기다렸지 
 
그렇지 않으면 그녀의 가장 아름다운 모습이    
'백설' 성가대에 계속 묶여있을 것같았네   
 
마침내 그녀를 그의 외딴집에 데려왔는데 
숲속 새를 새장 속에 넣은 것 처럼 
 
얌전한 아내 되었지만 우아한 멋 없어지고 
쾌활하고 황홀한 매력 또한 사라졌네  
 

그래서 난 진리를 갈망한다고 말했는데 
아름다움은 미숙한 어린애의 속임수며  
 
청춘의 유희로 끝나버린다고;
또 난 말했네, 내 발 밑 땅바닥의 소나무는 
 
화환처럼 둥근 원을 그리며
이끼 낀 돌 막대 위로 뻗어 있고   
 
나는 제비꽃 향기를 마시네;
내 주위에 참나무와 전나무들이 둘러 서있고  
 
솔방울과 도토리들은 땅바닥에 구르고;
빛과 신성이 가득차고 충만한 영원한 하늘은 
 
내 머리 위 높이 솟아 있네;
나는 다시 보았고, 다시 듣게 되었다네. 
 
출렁이는 강물과, 새벽녘 새의 노래를. 
 
아름다움이 몰래 내 감각 속으로 파고들어
